IHSA Week 9 Game Summary
This is it…. final weekend of high school football
October 23, 2015
So basically who did enough to get a spot in the Illinois High School Associations playoffs? There are many teams on the bubble that need to win this week and will be glued to a TV set Saturday night as teams are announced.
Here is our final week recaps:
Joliet Catholic 35, Marist 28
Joliet Catholic rebounded nicely in the final game with a 35-28 win against Marist in Joliet and ties for the ESCC title.
Zach Lukasik led the way with sacks on Marist’s final two possessions to help the Hilltoppers (8-1, 6-1) tie for the East Suburban Catholic title with Notre Dame.
Joliet Catholic went ahead 28-21 with 2 minutes, 45 seconds to play on Michael Johnson’s 3-yard touchdown run and never looked back. Johnson finished with 154 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
The RedHawks did add a late score, but did not recover an onside kick.
Lincoln-Way North 28, Lincoln-Way West 21
Lincoln-Way North caps their dream regular season with stunning win sending a message as their school may be closed next year… and yes, The Phoenix are UNDEFEATED!
The Warriors (7-2, 5-2) went up 21-7 with touchdowns on their first two possessions of the second half, on a Gabe Montalvo run and Lowman’s 19-yard pass to Jake Mauney, but North (9-0, 7-0) rallied back in the fourth quarter when Jake Arthur first went to Drew Slager from 7 yards to cut the deficit to 21-13 but missed the PAT.
“Even when we were down by two scores (in the fourth quarter), there were only positive thoughts and remarks on the sideline,” said North quarterback Jake Arthur, whose 10-yard pass to Drew Slager on the opening drive of overtime was the winner. “This is just a great win for the team, the school and the community.”
And for dramatic fashion, with a little over 90-seconds left to play, North perfectly executed a hook-and-ladder pass, with Arthur passing 15 yards to Slager, who then pitched it to a streaking Jaylin Branch, who raced untouched for 23 more yards down the left sideline. Arthur and Slager hooked up again for the tying two-point conversion.
“It’s kind of funny,” Branch said. “We practice that play every day and it never works. So we definitely picked a good time for it to pay off.”
West’s attempt to tie fell short, as Connor Lowman’s fourth-and-goal pass from the 5 was incomplete. What a game…
Besides the 9-0 slate, the victory also earned North the outright Southwest Suburban Red crown.
Brother Rice 37, St. Rita 21
Julian Blain recorded 191 yards and two touchdowns from scrimmage as visiting Brother Rice (8-1, 3-1) defeated St. Rita (3-6, 0-4) in Catholic League Blue action. Shaun Rule scored a pair of TDs for St. Rita.
St. Francis 23, Fenwick 14
Will Purdom scored two TDs (one passing, one rushing), as John Brundage had 17 carries for 96 yards for St. Francis.
Notre Dame 25, Carmel 13
Notre Dame is ESCC champ for the first time since 1981.
