Thornton 35, Lincoln-Way West 28

The Wildcats turned away Lincoln-Way West three times inside the red zone and had two takeaways en route to a 35-28 Southwest Suburban Red win in New Lenox.

Mr. Remi Simmons’ interception with 1 minute, 40 seconds left in the game sealed the win for Thornton (5-0, 3-0), which opened a 35-7 lead and held off a furious Warriors comeback.

West’s first two drives ended with a missed field goal and a turnover on downs at the Thornton 3-yard line. Then in the second quarter, McDaniel intercepted Lincoln-Way West quarterback Connor Lowman at the Warriors’ 35 and returned it 14 yards.

On the next play, Tionte McDaniel scooted around left end for a touchdown that made it 28-7. That was the fourth TD in a stretch of 2:17, three of them by Thornton.

“I looked forward to (playing both ways) this year because I knew we didn’t have that many numbers,” McDaniel said. “I had to step up and be a leader.”

Gabe Montalvo for Lincoln-Way West led the team offensively with 28 carries, 196 yards, TD; Joe Mauney, kick return TD, receiving TD.


Providence 28, St. Rita 0
Jared Drake completed 15 of 15 passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns to lead Providence (2-3, 1-1) to a 28-0 win over St.Rita (1-4, 1-2) in a Catholic League Blue showdown.

Joliet Catholic 41, Marian Central 3
Michael Johnson carried the load for the Hilltoppers  with a big victory. He finished the game with 216 yards on 32 carries, including scoring a 9-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter, including 3 touchdowns.

“I worked all summer and (last) winter for this moment,” Johnson said. “I didn’t play basketball. Football is my dream. We trained for this, working hard to be strong in the fourth quarter.”



Benet 29, Marist 25
Benet’s Robert Bordignon had 172 yards and 2 TDs on eight catches.

Nazareth 49, Marian Catholic 7
Carson Bartels (17 passing yards, 4 TDs, 2 INT) and Julian Love (6 carries for 81 yards, 3 catches for 119 yards) led Nazareth (4-1, 2-1).
