This weekend, Friday and Saturday, March 1-2, the best of the best Illinois Girls 3A / 4A basketball teams were on one court at Redbird Arena, the campus of Illinois State University in Normal. This was the 37th annual edition of this tourney, the 22nd consecutive year that Redbird has served as the host and the sixth year of the four-class system.

What a wonderful afternoon of “amateur” sports hosted by Illinois High School Association in Normal, IL at RedBird Arena where their will be two “new” 2013 Class 3A and 4A champions.

We are unway as the 2012 Class 4A champs come out playing what we are used to seeing – aggressive and attacking basketball. With this form of play the Dolphins jumped out in the first period to a 16-6 lead.

Class 3A Championship
Quincy Notre Dame 62, Vernon Hills 45
CONGRATULATIONS Lady Raiders on yet another undefeated season 30-0!
The two-time defending Class 2A girls basketball champion, Quincy Notre Dame, moved up this year and put some distance between them an ALL of the naysayers as they won the 2013 IHSA Girls Class 3A championship Saturday afternoon in Normal against Vernon Hills 62-45.
“It’s a great honor to be part of three straight championship teams and win Class 3A undefeated,” said Quincy Notre Dame senior Jordan Frericks, who had 14 points. “We’ll be remembered forever, and created a lot of great memories.”
Kassidy Gengenbacher led the Lady Raiders (30-0) with 20 points.
Vernon Hills (31-3) finished second for the second year in a row. Lauren Webb finished the game with a double-double – 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Class 3A Third Place game
Montini 42, Morton 38
Lady Broncos were led by Kelly Karlis, who scored 11 points followed by teammate Pauline Castro who added 9. Junior guard Sara Ross contributed 8 points and 8 boards.
Sarah Livingston had the hot hand for the Potters with a natural double-double – she knocked down 16 points and 12 boards.

Matt Rodewald will handle the hosting and sideline duties, along with the Class 3A and 4A finals of the Country Financial Three-Point Showdown on Friday and the Country Financial Queen of the Hill three-point shooting on Saturday, which pits the four class winners head-to-head.
