HBCU Signing Day…

Posted on February 15, 2012. Filed under: Football, NCAA Sports, Sporting News | Tags: , , , , , , , , |

How did the HBCU’s do on signing day?

According to a very popular national cable sports network, the cream of the crop prep football players can be found in the southern region of the United States.

Who can argue that considering the last six FBS national championships have been won by schools residing in the Southeastern Athletic Conference, and the highest rated recruiting classes are made up of schools in the South — more than 50 percent of the blue chippers came from there. Additionally, more than half of NFL players were a product of a southern college or university.  For more, visit http://www.amateursports365.com/Football/2012-HBCU-Natl-Signing-Day.html

Post National Signing Day…

Posted on February 15, 2012. Filed under: Football, Sporting News | Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

A day after National Signing day, it really appears that the old saying holds true… “the rich get richer” as several college football’s power programs continue to land top recruiting classes.

Defending national champ Alabama put the finishing touches on what’s considered the consensus top class. Running back T.J. Yeldon and safety Landon Collins are among the top players at their position. The rest of the class is sprinkled with high-rated performers on both sides of the ball.  For more, visit http://amateursports365.com/Football/day-after-2012-national-signing-day.html

Post Superbowl XLVI

Posted on February 8, 2012. Filed under: Football, Sporting News, Sports Business | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

A couple days after hanging out in Indianapolis, Indiana for the Superbowl XLVI….

There are a few things I’ve learned…

◆ lots of information is collected and shared during this period of time. I’ve heard upwards of 2,000 pages of pre-game information alone.

◆ and this doesn’t include the State of the NFL by commissioner Roger Goodell. His report was 10 pages long.

◆ I also found out that over 30,000 pictures are taken during the Superbowl game alone of which maybe 100 of those make it to editors desk.

◆ On Media Day… here are some highlights of the dumbess question asked…
-Logan Mankins, a guard for the Patriots, was asked Tuesday what the best part of being an offensive lineman is, he replied, ‘‘Blocking’’?

-Giants defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka, when asked Wednesday if getting to Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was important, replied: ‘‘If you get to the quarterback enough, if you hit him hard enough, it’s going to make him less effective’’?

-and lastly, Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes began his career? Well, in high school, his physical-education teacher said the football team needed a kicker. As Tynes relates it, ‘‘He said, ‘Lawrence, can you come out here and kick?’ I said, ‘Certainly.’  ’’

NCAA and Social Media

Posted on February 5, 2012. Filed under: Baseball, Basketball, Football, NCAA Sports, Sporting News | Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

Because of social media like Facebook and Twitter, fans have unprecedented access to the prospects their schools are recruiting. But in many cases, these interactions can constitute NCAA secondary violations when initiated by “representatives of the institution’s athletic interests,” otherwise known as boosters.
Just recently, former Washington All-American Lawyer Milloy might have committed such a violation when he contacted Shaq Thompson on Twitter and wrote that Thompson would “look nice in Purple & Gold,” Washington’s colors.

Thompson, the No. 16 in the ESPNU 150 and the nation’s No. 3 safety, is committed to Cal but is still considering the Huskies.

“The institutions are responsible for monitoring the contact between boosters and prospective student athletes,” said Charnele Kemper, the NCAA’s associate director of academic and membership affairs.

But for university compliance departments, this can be a meticulous, time-consuming undertaking. Even for those athletic departments with enormous resources and large compliance staffs.
